Nuffield Health respond to the regulation of medical implants

Nuffield Health welcomes the report of the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee into the Regulation of medical implants in the EU and UK.

Nuffield Health welcomes the report of the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee into the Regulation of medical implants in the EU and UK. We are pleased that the Committee has taken on board Nuffield Healths suggestions about improving the transparency and accountability of committees used to monitor the effectiveness of medical devices and the use of a black triangle system to flag up that devices have been approved using limited clinical data, as is used for medicines.

Karen Harrowing, Group Chief Pharmacist, Nuffield Health, said:

Nuffield Health has campaigned for a pharmaceutical approach to regulation of the implantable medical devices industry and we are disappointed that the Committee only agrees in part. We believe that patients should expect the same level of rigour to be applied to invasive products such as joint replacements and cosmetic implants. And, while we agree with the Committee that greater transparency is needed around the data which has led to the approval of medical devices, the Committee has not addressed the issues around the current lack of patient and professional information or the absence of updated information about devices and their potential side effects.
