Madeleine Lee is Creative Director of Swedish Interior Design, a bespoke interior design service. Her home on Hove seafront provides an ideal setting to showcase the acclaimed Swedish style
When Madeleine and Jo Lee first moved to their 1886 property in Hove they fell in love with the high ceilings, huge windows and wonderful period features. Their aim for the bedroom was to create a quiet and soothing sanctuary in classic Swedish style, using the wonderful light Swedish colour palette.
They undertook a sympathetic renovation using artisan handcrafting and organic, non-toxic products and paints. By choosing a blend of colours that made use of the massive amounts of light falling through the huge windows, we created an ambience that could hold the bedroom.
Using stunning paint from Ecos that shifts colour tones as the light changes from off white to lilac to Swedish blue, they accented the walls with a dado rail in a special darker grey. Inspired by a Swedish mansion they visited near Trosa in Sweden, they also painted trompe loeil bows around the upper walls.
The centrepiece of the bedroom is a huge handmade antique wood bed and coronet painted in antique cornflower white. This is covered in antique Swedish lace and scatter cushions, also handmade by Swedish Interior Design.
A hand carved antique oak Gustavian armoire finished in antique cornflower provides ample storage. This is complemented by a matching gentlemans wardrobe, also handmade from antique oak in Gustavian style with gilt detailing.
Other details in the room include a handmade bespoke 20ft square striped rug made of antique hemp linen, carved handmade antique pine server table, side table and decorated box settle. Various antique Swedish Rococo chairs have also been upholstered by their upholstery service.
Finally, to soften the light, they made 16ft double drop muslin curtains and stunning antique oak 12ft decorated shutters. All handmade items are made at the Swedish Interior Design bespoke workshop.
