Fashion with a green twist

These days we hear a lot about green issues and our carbon footprint. Students at Hurstpierpoint College decided to show that a passion for fashion need not cost the earth with their unique Recycled Fashion Show

YOUNG designers in Year 9 at Hurstpierpoint College made a green statement with their Recycled Fashion Show.

The shows title did not refer to inspiration from mainstream designers but from the materials that made up the clothes.

The 13 year-olds designed, created and modelled outfits using bubble wrap, wire, CDs, plastic bags and discarded clothing in fact anything they could lay their hands on.

They cut, shaped, ironed and stitched these unpromising objects until, miraculously it seemed, outfits emerged that were individual and always imaginative.

The event, the brainchild of Hursts Head of Art Tiffany Farrell, has become an annual happening and involves every child in Year 9.

Each year it gives an insight into the quite remarkable creativity, imagination and capacity for hard work present throughout this year-group

Finally, with panache and style that belied their years, the youngsters stalked the catwalk, each wearing his or her own creation.
