Get your hands dirty

I SHOULD definitely have done more in the garden by now. I should have cleared the vegetable patch and planted some spuds, weeded the flower beds, introduced some actual flowers and at the very least mown the lawn. But despite the fact the sun has done its best to tempt me outside, my hands have remained shamefully clean.

Thankfully, and for the second year running, there's an event that should inspire some action on my part and help prompt an improvement in the small area of grass and earth that we currently call our garden.

Gardens Week at Brighton's Royal Pavilion is the perfect opportunity to meet some great garden designers - the city's Chelsea gold medallist Andy Sturgeon, for example - and learn some simple ways to turn your own space into a garden to be proud of. Andy's an incredibly talented and passionate designer and it's a pleasure to feature him in this issue. You'll find his interview on page 81 of the May edition as well as details of 2-for-1 entry and the chance to win some tickets.

There's more inspiration for the garden beginning with our selection of the 25 most gorgeous gardens to visit this summer. Many belong to the National Gardens Scheme, which helps raise valuable funds for local charities. There are also many others in our guide offering Sussex Life readers discounts for entry so there's really no excuse not to pop along. I'm embarrassed to admit that I've only been to a handful of them but I'll be putting that right this year - if only to get some ideas.

And of course, if it's a new garden that you're looking for, you'll also find some of the best properties for sale in the county.

Finally, if you'd like Sussex Life delivered to your door each month why not take advantage of our latest subscription offer? It's 12 issues for 12 and you'll find details on page 61 click here to subcribe
