Getaway from it all - in Sussex...

WHETHER it's exploring the history trail in Rye, learning to cook in Haywards Heath or trying something as adventurous as gliding over Firle, there are plenty of ways to banish the January blues on offer in our fantastic county.

Personally, you wouldn't catch me anywhere near a paragliding centre
but Sussex Life's Kate Eastman says it's great. We gave her
the enviable task of finding ten of the best ways to spend the weekend in Sussex including activities, places to eat and stay. Why not explore her recommendations beginning on page 66?

Also in this issue we've assembled a pretty special group of people - those who we think are going to make their mark in 2009 and whose success, at least in part, is thanks to this county. There's an opera singer, business guru, boy actor, chef, artist and horsewoman and we think they'll all do well this year. Turn to page 82 to read their stories ... we're sure you'll be hearing a lot more about them in the weeks and months to come.

And let's face it, Sussex has some form in this area. You only need to flick through the pages of Who's Who (you'll be able to in the February issue, by the way) and you'll see a vast number of entries from these parts. From actors and musicians to inventors and explorers, there is lots of talent that calls this county home - Julie Walters, Sir Paul McCartney, David Dimbleby and Raymond Briggs, to name just a few. We've had our fair share of Olympic talent, too, including figure skater Robin Cousins. He brings his show Holiday on Ice to Brighton this month and you'll find an interview with beginning on page 72. Here he shares his thoughts on the show, his beloved city and, of course, winning gold at Lake Placid, New York, in 1980.

This time of year is also one for making plans and if yours include a wedding then our guide beginning on page 173 offers some great ideas for the big day.

Happy New Year and enjoy your Sussex Life ...
