Horsham is a vibrant town in West Sussex with many independent firms that add to its special character. We spoke to the leaders of three of them about what they do and why they like doing business in the town.
The councils view
Cllr Roger Paterson, Cabinet Member for Local Economy and Leisure at Horsham District Council, said: We are very fortunate that Horsham has a such a widespread reputation for high quality independent businesses, and the quoted examples are a well deserved tribute to the ingenuity of Horshams commercial community.
Recent research has shown the Horsham District to be a hotspot for home based businesses, and this growth sector is increasingly reflected in the number of new independent retail businesses that are currently opening in Horsham town centre.
Such exciting independent stores as Cape Scarlett, Carmela, Inside Design, Just My Sushi, Marthas Barn, Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shop, Raspberry Laces, Sassy Shoes and Wabi have all opened in the last couple of months.
Horshams combination of an attractive retail environment, strong footfall and ideally suited shop units brings the town increasingly onto the radar of anyone looking for new commercial premises.

Julie and Peter Maxted
Holiday Help 4 Petz and the Pets, Homes & Gardens Co
When Julie Maxted set up her business Holiday Help 4 Petz nine years ago, she did not imagine that she would end up expanding her business through franchising into other counties and would have her husband as her business partner.
Julie got the idea for Holiday Help 4 Petz when she was sorting out the care for her familys many pets when they went on holiday. She ended up taking them to four different places. It was then she realised that there might be a demand for a one-stop solution.
I thought there must be somebody around who could come into the house and do the whole lot. I couldn't find anybody in Horsham who did that. At the time I didn't realise that pet sitting was a profession.
There is a demand as 49 per cent of the population have pets. Julie and Peter and their children Peter, 20, Charlotte, 19 and Chris, 15, have eight pets between them, including Lucy the Labrador and Carlo the cat.
Now Julie offers a service looking after all varieties of pets, many, for example, cats in the homes of their owners and she will do other helpful things too like putting out the rubbish, picking up letters from the mat and even hovering up after the pet.
When her husband Peter retired as a firefighter after 30 years he had the idea of franchising or licensing their model to others who want to set up their own petsitting business. Then the couple began their business partnership. At first Julie said that was challenging but now they have settled into a really good working relationship.
We have developed our own way of working between us. Communication is the key. It was his idea to develop the licensing side of the business.
Now Peter spends much of his time looking after the licensing side of the business that started in May. Already they have signed up five licensees in Surbiton, Norfolk, Southend, South Devon and Horley, here in Sussex. That business is called Tranquil Pets, Homes and Gardens.
He said it took some time to adjust to working with his wife but now everything was going well. There is an adjustment to doing it and we have separate responsibilities. I look after the sales and development of the licensing business and help out on Holiday Help 4 Petz and Julie runs that business. Now it is really, really good.

The Horsham Gallery,New Street
Edgy, contemporary art in Horsham?! Some said I was mad, deluded or both. Luckily, although I have made a few mistakes and no doubt will continue to do so, I was correct in thinking that Horsham would be interested and very keen to see fresh new work. And so they have been.
I have been picture framing and selling various images for over 20 years, so when a good friend, John Lines offered me the Gallery he had painstakingly set up, I jumped at the chance. Through the immeasurable help of friends and family, The Horsham Gallery is now exhibiting works not seen in Sussex or anywhere else, before.
I live in a village close to Horsham, but moved into the town in 1994, having left South West London. The friendly and warm welcome so evident back then is much the same now, as I cross the busy Carfax to get a sandwich.
An eternal pleasure is the open countryside and not forgetting the sea of course. I have very fond memories of Sunday walks with our children and very hairy dog, in all weathers and with plenty of the resident mud returning home with us. London was my birthplace and still draws me there frequently, yet returning home to Sussex always seems like a holiday.
The final 2 weeks of August, will see us exhibiting at the Menier Gallery (old chocolate factory) in Southwark, close to the Tate. Most of the artists who exhibit with us are Sussex based, this sojourn to the Smoke will be an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of what we are doing.
Abstract work is a speciality, we have completely unique work on show. We also work with interior designers, who understand their clients needs and wants. A full framing service and photographic printing is available.

Vince Di Lina
The Company Hairdressing
Tell us a little about you. Why did you decide to open your business?
My name is Vince Di Lena and since moving from Leicestershire I have had a drive to open my own business. I come from an Italian background with both my parents emigrating from Italy when they were 23 and like most Italian families they typically fall into certain employment restaurants, cafes, bars, ice cream or hairdressing and as most of my family are in the hairdressing world people, the apple didnt fall very far from the tree.
Italians want people to have a good time and be well looked after and as hairdressing has always been a passion of mine, I could fulfil a lot of these requirements.
Something that has always frustrated me with hairdressing was its back street, blue rinse image, along with an expectation of dreadful service, poor wages and out of date management.
I wanted to try and change that image and show that hairdressing was a fantastic job and something that you can make a real career from.
Tell us a little about your business. Where did you get the idea to combine a bar with a
What Im striving for is a company that showcases hairdressing as an amazing industry and to have a salon that not only gives you a great haircut, but great experience too.
I opened The Company Hairdressing in Horsham six years ago and am very pleased that is has established itself as one of the leading salons in Horsham. We pride ourselves on the fact that you will have great experience whilst with us something you will really look forward to.
The whole approach of The Company Hairdressing is a salon that is a meeting place, a place where you can be pampered and made to look and feel great but to also to sense like you belong to something special, thats what I would like and thats where I would like to go!
In 2008, I had the chance to extend the salon into what had been a ground floor cafe premises and bring an added dimension to the experience we could offer - we are now one of the only salons in West Sussex that can also offer a complete lunch whilst in salon. In our Lounge Bar you can have a range of fresh, made to order panini, sandwiches and award winning coffees (voted best cappuccino in Horsham by the Horsham Advertiser), or even a wide selection of alcoholic drinks from our licensed bar! And of course, if youre having your hair done with us, the drinks, including alcoholic ones, are complimentary.
Do you find your customers use both?
We have customers that visit us for either or both the bar and the salon. Often, people stop by the bar first, enjoy a coffee and cake, then realise they can also make an appointment for a haircut.
Horsham is a growing town with more and more people relocating to this area and to satisfy the influx of a more metropolitan style client I decided to open the salon here. Generally we are seeing that these clients require a more bespoke place to go, perhaps reflecting what they would find in London.
What do you like about the town?
In the six years Ive been here, Ive seen Horsham move quickly, with many new and exciting restaurants coming to town. It has not lost its market town community feel, and for me has the perfect location between the North and South Downs, but has a real sense of style thanks to its proximity to both London and Brighton. For me, Horsham is a place which I love and is now my new home as I can not think of a better place to live, work and to bring up my family.
Recently, its been very busy because were launching a brand new haircare product range in the UK, through our Horsham salon, but when I do get some time off, I like nothing better than to take the kids out into the stunning countryside around us, come rain or shine!
