Nightingale Shepherd Huts is a Sussex family business. Carsten Harud, 37, has lived in Sussex all his life and has been working as an established carpenter, specialising in cabinet making since 2002. He is known for his creative and space saving ideas, attention to detail and high standard of work. He has many creative strings to his bow including;
supplying Bloomsbury inspired painted furniture for Charleston Farm House shop near Firle for over 17 years,
regularly exhibits his painted work for the Fiveways Open houses in the Brighton May Festival,
designing and fitting a number of local shops including Sussex Produce Company in Steyning High Street, West Sussex.
His Shepherd Huts are based on the idea of the original shepherd's hut used for many centuries to provide hillside accommodation for shepherds during lambing season. Today, Nightingale Shepherd Huts are being used to provide a variety of different accommodation needs such as an additional bedroom, guest room, office, studio, children's playroom or garden retreat.
Why the name, Carsten explains A few year's ago I decided I wanted to push my creativeness and work with more natural materials, with the help of my wife, we started 'Nightingale Shepherd Huts'. The name comes from my family home, which is based in the West Sussex Countryside, where I grew up and my mother still lives there.
Beautifully made, they are constructed, where possible, from reclaimed and renovated materials. The interior and design are bespoke pieces of work with some incorporating one hundred year old oak framed leaded windows, stained glass windows, old stable doors, latches and fittings. The huts are fully insulated and the interior finished in tongue and groove. The exterior is made from feather board which can be natural or stained and has bargeboards which are painted with a Bloomsbury inspired pattern.
Electrics, wood burners, fold- up table, cupboards, shelves, balconies or beds can be fitted and one excellent advantage of increasing space this way is that shepherd huts do not require planning consent and are fully mobile. With innovative ideas and artistic flare Carsten is confident you won't find another hut like it.
Nightingale Shepherd Huts could be your perfect solution to an additional bedroom, guest room, office, studio, children's playroom or garden retreat. Whatever your vision, Carsten the Carpenter can make it come to life.
