The Martlets plays a vital role in helping people to live life as fully as they can as they approach the end of their lives and assists patients and their families to cope with the challenging demands of a terminal illness.

Hospice care is aimed at alleviating the distressing symptoms associated with illnesses such as cancer, heart failure and neurological conditions and encompasses specialist emotional support for the families and carers through the illness and into bereavement.

Typically, patients may be in the last year or less of their illness. They may visit the hospice, or be under the care of the Hospice services several times.

Maintaining the best possible quality of life and supporting independence are our chief aims. Life is precious - indeed our very reason for being is to care for patients at the end of life and to make the end of their lives a positive and dignified experience.

Facilities and services at the Hospice, which is located in Hove include an 18-bed In-Patient Unit; a bereavement and counselling service and a Hospice at Home service. A respite service is also available. Access to the Martlets and Hospice at Home is via medical referral from GPs, District Nurses, the Macmillan Community Team or hospital consultants.

We care for people living in Brighton and Hove and neighbouring communities. Care is provided on the basis of medical need and is provided free of charge. Since opening in 1997, the Martlets staff and volunteers have cared for and/or supported over 22,000 local people. There is a special bond between the Hospice and its community and maintaining this special relationship is vital for the future of the Martlets.

The Hospice is an independent charity and is not part of the NHS. We must generate over 4.3 million annually to ensure the continuation of Hospice services. Less than a third of this funding is received from the local Primary Care Trust. As you can see, the help and financial support from individuals and community groups is essential for us to continue providing our much needed services. We ask people to support us financially now, so that we will be here in the future when they need us most.

Ways to help include making donations, supporting one of our many events, or, organising your own event, joining the 9,500 people who play our weekly lottery, making donations of books, clothing, furniture etc to, or, buying from our shops, leaving us a gift in your will or volunteering. Every gesture of support does make a real difference!

You maintained her dignity, kept her spirits up and, most importantly, kept her free of pain. You made it possible for us to stay with her in those last precious days, which meant a great deal.
