A beautiful walk along arguably the best part of the South Downs Way, taking in the Cuckmere Valley, the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head all in a day. You can't always rely on the weather though!
Walk length: 12 miles (very hilly in parts though)
From Alfriston, head south along the east side of the Cuckmere valley passing the white horse on the other side of the valley. Then go east along the coastal path past the Birling gap where there is the Birling Gap pub and restaurant. The decommissioned Belle Tout lighthouse is next along the coast and closely followed by Beachy Head and its own lighthouse down on the rocks below. Here you will also find the large Beachy Head gastro-pub. From this point Eastbourne is a nice 40 minute downhill jaunt.
Public transport to Alfriston is limited to a volunteer community bus service with a differing timetable most days. The nearest rail stations are either Polegate or Seaford which are around an hours walk to Alfriston or a short taxi ride.
