Visitors began arriving for Worth Abbey Open Day long before the opening time of 2pm.
By 6.30pm, when visitors participated in the concluding event of the day by joining the monks for Vespers, close on 1,100 people had entered the refurbished Abbey church and joined conducted tours around the campus.
DArcy Trinkwon, the international concert organist and resident organist at Worth, played and the renowned Worth School choir performed a selection of sacred music.
Guided meditation, a question and answer session, arts and crafts and storytelling activities for children and an exhibition illustrating the work of the many organisations at Worth were additional attractions.
Father James Cutts, Parish Priest at Worth, said, I am absolutely thrilled that so many people, some from quite long distances, came to see what Worth is all about.
He added: It was a wonderful day for all of us, and it gave such pleasure to see so many clearly enjoying the experience. I hope they will visit us again.
