It may be cold outside, but that is no excuse to let your fitness suffer. Hazel Sillver rounds up some of the best ways to keep fit around Sussex during the winter months

Get Your Skates On

Ice skating, Brighton - 8 November to 18 January

Practice your arabesque spins on this rink in front of Brighton’s beautiful Royal Pavilion. Penguin supports are available for children to cling on to and refreshments are served in the rinkside cafe and bar.

Roller Disco, all over Sussex

Party on rollerskates at indoor venues around Sussex. The Get Your Skates On team run weekly roller discos in Uckfield, Billingshurst, Henfield, Steyning, Brighton, Hove and Crowborough. If you fancy polishing your dance skills, instructor Asha Kirkby ( offers skate dance lessons in Brighton.

Indoor skateboarding, Eastbourne

Perfect your ollies and airs at the West Skates indoor skate park. The 10,000 sq ft includes ramps of various sizes for skateboards, rollerskates, scooters and bikes. Parents can watch in the viewing gallery and enjoy refreshments in the café.

Skiing & snowboarding

Knockhatch Ski & Snowboard Centre, Hailsham

Show off your parallel turns on this 110m outdoor dry ski slope. The Play Grass surface does not have the gaps (associated with broken thumbs and fingers) of traditional dry slopes, and its soft backing means it is gentler to fall upon!

Bowles, Eridge Green

This charity outdoor centre on the Sussex-Kent border boasts two outdoor floodlit ski slopes. One is a nursery slope, which provides a softer landing for beginners and children. Courses and private lessons in skiing and snowboarding are available for adults and children.

Hot Yoga - Escape the winter chill by doing yoga in a heated room

Hot Yoga, Chichester

Warm up in this custom-built hot yoga studio. Bikram Yoga classes, each lasting 90 minutes, in 40 degrees heat, are available seven days a week. Yoga is de-stressing and boosts flexibility, strength and balance.

01243 698725;

Yogaheat, Haywards Heath

The dynamic yoga classes at Yogaheat are not as hot as Bikram lessons, taking place in a room heated to just 29 degrees. The lessons are popular with runners, who find the yoga boosts their strength, co-ordination and stamina.

Dynamic Hot Yoga, Hove

The energetic form of Hatha yoga taught here is available seven days a week, in 36 degree heat. Injuries are taken into account and poses (asanas) adopted accordingly. Dynamic hot yoga is great for burning calories safely, de-stressing and improving flexibility.

The friendly Southdown Club has four squash courts as well as two new indoor tennis courts. Club evenings and afternoons are organised for both sports, and there is a gym and a clubhouse bar. Squash coaching is available for adults and children.
