Where to see Snowdogs in Brighton and Hove

A pack of cuddly Snowdogs has descended on Brighton and Hove to create the city’s newest art attraction. Jenny Mark-Bell finds out more...
A pack of giant Snowdogs are taking over Brighton and Hove to create a city art trail which includes many of its iconic locations as well as some hidden gems. The extraordinary public art trail, Snowdogs by the Sea, is in place from Saturday 24 September until Sunday 27 November 2016. The trail features 45 giant Snowdogs, inspired by the much-loved animated short film, The Snowman™ and The Snowdog, based on the book by Sussex-based author Raymond Briggs.
Commissioned artists have created each Snowdog so that every one has a unique identity. Some celebrate Brighton’s unique history, seafront location and iconic architecture. Brighton resident and DJ Norman Cook, AKA Fatboy Slim, has commissioned street artist RYCA to create his Snowdog, whilst crime author and Sussex Life columnist Peter James has a police-themed Snowdog in a nod to the protagonist of his best-selling Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series.
The giant Snowdogs will also be joined by a pack of 24 snow puppies designed by Brighton schoolchildren which will be on show at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Hove Museum and the Booth Museum of Natural History, Hove Library and Jubilee Library throughout the event.
The trail is being organised by Brighton charity the Martlets Hospice in conjunction with Wild in Art, one of the UK’s leading creative producers of public art events. Snowdogs by the Sea is expected to raise significant funds for the hospice and attract tens of thousands of visitors to Brighton and Hove in the autumn.
Artist Steve Mason created Mod Dog (our September cover star), sponsored by Churchill Square. For Steve, designing and painting the Mod Dog has been an exercise in nostalgia. “I have depicted the time of the early Sixties in Brighton. It was an era I was part of when I saw groups like The Who appearing in Brighton, when my earnings as a stockroom boy at Woolworths were spent on Ben Sherman shirts and I dreamt about a Lambretta TV175.”
Steve has painted since he was a young boy but was only recently inspired to leave landscapes and seascapes behind and develop his now signature style. It was a style he first practised in the Sixties by painting murals on his bedroom walls. As a former Martlets employee (he was their ICT manager until last year), Steve is pleased to be raising money for them through his art.
Nostalgia also drove Judith Berrill’s design of her Snowdog Patch – The Unfinished Quilt, sponsored by Brighton & Hove Hotels Association. Patch was based on a patchwork quilt Judith’s mother started in the 1950s but never managed to complete. Judith had the idea of ‘finishing’ the quilt on a Snowdog in tribute to both her mother and the Martlets, which cared for her at the end of her life in 2010. Judith said: “The design replicates the fabrics in the quilt – some of which I recognise as scraps from Mum’s dresses and skirts. I’d like to think she would be pleased that it’s now finished and that it’s associated with the Marlets hospice. I also liked the idea of the icy Snowdog being wrapped up and cosy in the warm quilt – though hopefully not melting!”
Clifton the Snowdog was sponsored by Streamline Taxis and decorated by artists at Chalk Gallery. A small group helped Lyndsey Smith to paint the background of pebbles, masking out where each of the 21 postcards making up the design would be painted, before a rota was drawn up to allow each of the artists time to work on Clifton.
Chalk Gallery artist Veronica Van Eijk is best known for her inquisitive cow paintings. She depicted “Brighton and Hove Albion – the Seagulls. I paint animals so here is my cheeky and rather smug Seagull football fan, who can watch the matches from the Sussex Downs whenever he likes!”
Details of all the events will be on the www.snowdogsbythesea.co.uk website. A trail map and Snowdogs by the Sea app will also be available to enable visitors to discover all the sculptures and ‘unlock’ special offers and unique content.
