Don’t miss out on any of the fantastic events that are happening across our fair county this year, with this handy 2016 guide. Compiled by Alice Cooke


• 5-6 January Ardingly International Antiques and Collector’s Fair, The South of England Showground, Ardingly. Up to 1,700 stalls housing thousands of goods – from fine antique furniture to delicate ceramics.

• 5-10 January Moscow City Ballet, Chichester Festival Theatre. The internationally acclaimed company perform Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty.


• 20-28 February Rye Bay Scallop Week, various venues, Rye. Tasting events, cookery schools and demonstrations, live music and more.

• 28 February Brighton Half Marathon. A beautiful seafront course, amazing crowd support and one of the first half marathons on the running calendar.


• 12 March Charity Abseil, Arundel Castle. Join Winston’s’ Wish children’s charity as they celebrate 10 years of services in West Sussex with a series of special anniversary events. Embark on this great challenge and abseil 180ft from one of Sussex’s most iconic landmarks. 01403 211030

• 17-19 March Sussex Beer Festival, various venues, Brighton. CAMRA’s huge annual beer and cider festival, with an enormous choice of ales.


• 15-17 April Brighton Marathon Weekend, Brighton. Encompassing Brighton Marathon, BM10k, the Mini Mile Races and the exhibition.

• 24 April - Dragonboat Festival, Marina Square, Brighton Marina. In aid of Rockinghorse children’s charity.


• 30 April - 2 May Brighton and Hove Foodies Festival, Brighton Hove Lawns. Back for a seventh year and bigger than ever before - demonstartions, celebrity chefs and stalls aplenty.

• 7-29 May Brighton Festival, various venues, Brighton. An annual celebration of music, theatre, dance, circus, art, film, literature, debate, outdoor and family events.

• 21 May-28 August The Glyndebourne Festival, Glyndebourne. The team mark the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death with productions of Béatrice et Bénédict and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

• 26-28 May Sussex International Food and Drink Festival, various venues, Brighton. Bringing together the world’s leading producers for two days of stalls, demonstrations and workshops.

• 28 May Heathfield Show, Heathfield Showground. A one day agricultural show based in the heart of the weald.


• 3-5 June West Dean Design and Craft Fair, West Dean College, near Chichester. Printmakers, designers and makers to show and sell their work alongside hands-on taster workshops and free demonstrations in contemporary art and craft.

• 4 June Crowborough Fun Day, various venues, Crowborough. French market, local traders, free entertainment and live music.

• 4-5 June Floral Fringe Fair, Knepp Castle, West Grinstead. An eclectic, quirky, foodie, arty, plantaholics wildlife event with a vintage twist.

• 4-5 June Contemporary Craft Show with the Sussex Guild, Parham House and Gardens, near Pulborough. 01903 742021;

• 9-11 June The South of England Show, The South of England Showground, Ardingly. The best of British agriculture, equestrianism, horticulture, food and drink, country crafts, sports and many other rural activities.

• 16 June Sussex Day, various venues. Celebrate all things Sussex with events and happenings across the county

• 18-25 June Eastbourne Tennis, Devonshire Park, Eastbourne. Your chance to see the top women of the WTA. It’s also the last opportunity for players to prepare for Wimbledon, which starts the following week.

• 23-26 June Goodwood Festival of Speed, Goodwood. An annual hill climb featuring historic motor racing vehicles and spectacles galore, held in the grounds of Goodwood House.

• 23-26 June The Hickstead Derby Meeting, The All England Showjumping Ground, Hickstead. The Derby is one of the most famous showjumping classes in the world.


• 1-3 July Love Supreme Jazz Festival, Glynde Palace, Glynde. A classic jazz bill with a modern boutique, green field experience.

• 2-3 July Paddle Round The Pier Beach Festival, Brighton Pier. The event has raised over £250,000 for charity in recent years and in the 20th Anniversary year the charities will be The RNLI; Amaze; Surfers Against Sewage.

• 9-10 July Parham Garden Weekend, Parham House and Gardens, near Pulborough. A weekend for plant and garden enthusiasts. 01903 742021;

• 14-30 July Petworth Festival, various venues, Petworth. Petworth shows off its cultural best with this music and arts extravaganza that attracts thousands of visitors from around the world.

• 17 July The Jaeger-Lecoultre Gold Cup Final, Cowdray, near Midhurst. Played to decide the British Open Polo Championship, this is the premier polo tournament in the world at 22 goal (High Goal) level.

• 26-30 July Qatar Goodwood Festival, Goodwood. Five days of some of the best horse racing in the country, on the beautiful and historic track.

• 26-31 July The Longines Royal International Horse Show, The All England Showjumping Ground, Hickstead. As one of the biggest outdoor shows in the country, the Longines Royal International Horse Show uniquely sees the elite of many equestrian disciplines compete side by side.


• 5-7 August Chilli Fiesta, West Dean, near Chichester. The UK’s biggest chilli festival returns. Join the party and dance to live Latin music, watch cookery and gardening demonstrations and taste delicious chilli foods.

• 11-14 August Eastbourne Airbourne, Eastbourne. Airbourne returns with a thrilling line up including military fast jets, helicopters, parachutists and incredible displays from aerobatics teams, including the Red Arrows.

• 25-29 August Rye International Jazz and Blues Festival, various venues, Rye. One of the UK’S best boutique musical festivals presents an array of superb world class headline acts featuring the very best in jazz, blues, soul, r&b, funk, Latin and World Music.

• 5-7 August Brighton Pride, various venues, Brighton. Set once again to bring our fabulous city together, with purpose and with Pride in 2015.


• 9-11 September, Goodwood Revival, Goodwood. A three-day festival for the types of road racing cars and motorcycle that would have competed during the circuit’s original period (1948–1966).

• 10 September Boomerang Hickstead Music Festival, The All England Showjumping Ground, Hickstead. Featuring music from some of the world’s most prolific artists, gourmet pop up restaurants, street food and alternative entertainment.

• 3 September - 2 October Horsham District Food and Drink Festival, various venues, Horsham and Steyning. Special offers, events and promotions taking place right across the Horsham district – an excellent opportunity to find out what local producers have to offer.

• TBC September Hastings Seafood and Wine Festival, various venues, Hastings. The best local food, drink and sumptuous seafood dishes with over 30 stalls. Enjoy cooking demonstrations with celebrity chefs, non-stop live music, beer festival and fantastic family entertainment.


• Throughout October Battle Arts and Music Festival, various venues, Battle. Back for a second year following the huge success of last year, celebrating local talent.

• TBC Apple Affair, West Dean, near Chichester. Celebrate the best of the British autumn harvest including the impressive apple harvest from West Dean’s own orchards and pumpkins and gourds from the Victorian Kitchen Garden.

• TBC Brighton Fashion Week, various venues, Brighton. Brighton will transform into a fashion mecca for international innovative designers and artists with events that include, competitions, industry networking, workshops, installations and catwalk shows.

• 1-2 October, Autumn Show and Game Fair, The South of England Showground, Ardingly. A great day out for fans of hunting, shooting and fishing, with lots of attractions to entertain the whole family.

• 6 October The Celebration of Sussex Life Awards, The Hilton Brighton Metropole. It’s back and once again bigger than ever, celebrating all that’s great about Sussex.

• 22-30 October Wild Boar Week, Rye The perfect opportunity to indulge in culinary delights from the countryside – restaurants will be showcasing an array of gamey treats and events include walks, tours, live music, quiz nights and more.


• 5 November Bonfire Night celebrations, across the county.

• 11 November Armistice Day and annual services of remembrance, across the county. Services of Remembrance and wreath laying ceremonies to honour Armed Forces personnel past and present. 


• 3-4 December The Winter Fair, The South of England Showground, Ardingly. Regional foods, gifts and stocking fillers – the atmosphere is warm and welcoming for all the family.

• 3 December The Snowman Spectacular Ball, The Hilton Brighton Metropole. In aid of Chestnut Tree House.
