Arts charity South East Dance has an ambition: to build a brand new, iconic home for dance in East Sussex for artists and local people alike. The Dance Space is unique in that it will provide purpose-built facilities dedicated to dance – there is nothing else like it in the region or capital.
It might come as a shock to learn that 68% of dance artists in Brighton are forced out of the city to find studios. The knock on effect is an estimated £1.2 million lost from the local economy each year. In Sussex, most professional studios are provided through the improvised use of halls, rather than fit for purpose facilities. Similarly, local communities struggle to find suitable spaces to develop their passion for dance.
Jamie Watton, Artistic Director CEO for South East Dance says, “Dance enhances the lives of individuals and invigorates communities, but this vital art form does not yet have a permanent home in our city. We need to raise crucial funds to make The Dance Space happen and we can only do this with the support of local people and businesses.”
South East Dance has a clear vision: to create a state-of-the-art dance centre in East Sussex, accessible to professionals and locals alike. As a purpose-built facility dedicated to dance, The Dance Space goes beyond the scope of a typical rehearsal space. It will be a national centre of excellence in choreography and talent-nurturing, both areas needing vital investment for the future of UK dance. And, even more crucially, it will be a vibrant community space and cultural asset for people living in the county.
South East Dance has been working hard to make The Dance Space happen. With over £3.2 million raised so far, they are in the final push to secure £500,000 by November.
