Princess Alexandra has been President since 1959 and has visited several of its overseas projects to prevent and cure blindness.
The Queen is Patron of the charity - formerly the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind, which has screened more than 200 million people and performed more than 7 million sight-saving operations.
Sightsavers employees from around the world, corporate and individual supporters and the actresses and celebrity ambassadors Haydn Gwynne (originally from Hurstpierpoint) and Sunetra Sarker were in the Palaces Picture Gallery to toast the charitys achievements.
Pricess Alexandra cut the birthday cake (baked by the Palace) with Lady Jean Wilson OBE, widow of the charitys founder Sir John Wilson, who lives in Roedean.
Also in attendance was HRH Prince Abdulaziz Bin Ahmed Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud a member of the Saudi Royal Family and patron of several sight-related organisations and NGOs in the Middle East.
