Gatwick Airport’s bosses’ plan to build a second runway has been backed by East Sussex County Council.

Councillor Peter Pragnell said jobs and potential improved infrastructure were the reason for the decision.

In January 2015 Crawley Borough councillors joined Kent and West Sussex County Councils by voting against the plans.

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and Horsham District Council have also previously declared their opposition to a new runway.

We asked our Twitter followers what they thought:

@arwyns_dad: Lunacy. Commercially the UK needs it, but for that exact reason, it should be at Heathrow and not Gatwick.

@MSiggsy: Sussex & surrounding areas would never be the same again. Increased air/noise pollution and gridlocked roads #nonewrunway

@jetowey: #NoGatwick – poor business case and potentially appalling impact on Ashdown Forest

@IanCollins67: #nogatwick train service is too poor now & full at rush hour so couldn’t cope with any more people using it

@tiffins11: #NoGatwick! We need less carbon emissions, not more! Travel less, have cyber-conferences, holiday at home!

@UseYourLoaf: #nogatwick already too busy and congested both roads and trains.

@missterriwire: #NoGatwick – flying back into Gatwick late on 9th Jan, passport control still took 45 minutes. Huge queues…

@missterriwire: add to that only 1 guard on duty at the train station because “they can’t afford more staff on duty”…

@nb_borg: the UK economy needs to keep up with Europe’s infrastructural development #yesgatwick
