Each month Emily Bamber and her family give their recommendations for a fun-filled family day out. This month it is the turn of the seaside resort of Worthing

Rain - Worthing Museum and Art Gallery

You could happily fill a whole day here – as well as fascinating permanent and visiting exhibitions there is a great programme of children’s events. Pop in with under-fives on 2 September for a transport day; handle archeological items every other Saturday and, until 19 September, enjoy artwork by local schoolchildren. The museum also has one of the largest collections of antique toys in the country, with dolls from the late 18th century.

Shine - the great outdoors

Worthing is at its best in the sunshine, so head to Beach House Park and play giant outdoor chess, follow the cycle path to Lancing or drive out to
High Salvington Windmill on 13 September for rural craft demonstrations and cake stalls. Of course, this is also the perfect place to have an old-fashioned day at the seaside, so relax in a deckchair with an ice cream; have fun on the Victorian pier; or stroll along the five-mile promenade.

Family Lunch - Coast Café des Artistes

Right on the beach about 200m east of the pier, this is a popular spot for families with its play area and splash fountain. Open for breakfast, coffees and lunches.

Dinner - Montagues Tex Mex

Kids under 10 eat free at this lively Mexican restaurant on Montague Street; there’s an extensive children’s menu and also colouring sheets to keep them busy.
