Each month, Emily Bamber and her family test-drive days out in the area. This month it is the turn of the East Sussex harbour town, Newhaven

Rain - Paradise Park

It may sell plants, wellies and sheds, but Paradise Park is far from an ordinary garden centre. Hidden behind its unassuming facade is a fascinating natural history museum complete with replica dinosaurs, an earthquake simulator and educational displays, showing everything from caveman and explorers to Egyptian mummies and deep sea divers. There’s also a large soft play area and indoor arcade games; and if the weather improves there are vast gardens to explore with yet more dinosaurs. For local parents, it’s the number one rainy day option.

Shine - Newhaven Fort

Stroll along the ramparts and pretend to fire the enormous cannons; wave at the fishing boats or the ferry in the harbour below. With the Downs behind you and the Channel in front of you, the views from Newhaven Fort are terrific on a sunny day, and with 10 acres to explore plus an adventure playground the kids are sure to burn off some energy. And if the weather does turn you’ll find underground tunnels, a simulated World War II Blitz shelter and a fascinating military museum where they can learn about life in the fort through both wars.

Family lunch

• Horace’s Fish Bar - A traditional chippie on Chapel Street, serving fresh fish and kids’ meals – locals rave about the fluffy batter. 01273 514275

• Padella D’Oro - A much-loved slice of Italy tucked away on Bridge Street offering classic pizzas, pasta and puds. 01273 516334
