Each month Emily Bamber and her family test-drive the best family days out in Sussex. This month it is the turn of the West Sussex town of Bognor Regis

RAIN…

• Butlins - The much-loved family resort is not just for mini-breakers; it’s open to day-visitors too. Take advantage of live entertainment in the Skyline Pavilion; try fencing, tenpin bowling and other sports, lark about in the indoor sub-tropical waterpark or the soft play area. Day tickets must be booked in advance, and you can choose from all-day passes, which means you can arrive at 10am and stay as late as 8pm, or afternoon passes – great for after-school fun when the children are still full of beans.

OR SHINE…

• Play in the park - As well as a beautiful stretch of beach, Bognor has two large parks both awarded Green Flag status by Keep Britain Tidy. Hotham Park is where the town’s founder built a gracious home in 1792; it’s now a 20-acre public space complete with boating lake, miniature railway, putting course, picnic benches and a play area. Alternatively take a stroll in Marine Park Gardens further west; there’s a miniature golf course here as well, plus plenty of paths for bikes and scooters. Look out for spring flowers emerging from the landscaped beds.

FAMILY LUNCH

• The Diner - a brand new eatery at Butlins will transport you back to the 1950s with rock ‘n’ roll on the juke box, performing waiters and even a shake bar. Kids mains include mini-dogs and burgers and cost £4.95.

• The Deli at Aldwick - this popular spot near Marine Park Gardens is great for coffee and cake or light lunches. The service is friendly, the hot chocolates are loaded with marshmallows and children’s lunch bags cost just £3.
