This month, Emily Bamber offers her suggestions for a day out in Bexhill-on-Sea

Rain - De La Warr Pavilion

If the heavens open or the wind is up, then make for the De La Warr Pavilion, where there is always plenty to look at and space for children to roam around. Throughout December, admire rarely seen images from the archive of Magnum photography agency. Pop in on Sunday 7 December for free picture-story-making with a local artist, and the following day there’s a storytelling and rhyme session for pre-schoolers.

Shine - Walk along the beach

Wrap up warm and take their bikes or scooters down to the seafront for a hearty winter walk. Parking is free and unrestricted along much of the two-mile promenade and cafés are strategically placed for grabbing a hot drink. Look out for the petrified forest at low tide, and on 6 December don’t be surprised if you see a lot of Santas running along the beach – it’s the annual Lions Club fun run.

Family lunch - Tea Beside the Sea

Tucked beneath the De La Warr Pavilion, this quirky tea room has nostalgic mis-matched china and old-fashioned children’s toys. Great for breakfasts, sandwiches, soups, coffee and cake.

Cooden Beach Hotel

For something more formal, head to this landmark hotel right on the shingle. Try posh fish and chips in the restaurant or sandwiches in the bar, and afterwards wrap up warm and fly a kite on the beach.
