In this first of a new series, Kate Eastman finds the best things to do with children in the county with her son Jasper

Nestling at the foot of Firle Beacon on the South Downs, just five miles from Lewes, is delightful Middle Farm.
This 625-acre working family farm offers a warm country welcome with something for every member of the family to enjoy.
You can meet friendly chickens, ducks, spotted pigs, sheep, donkeys, playful rabbits and guinea pigs. There are timed events throughout the day, including the prize-winning pedigree Jersey cows being milked. There is an outdoor playground, hay play barn, nature trail and picnic area.
Open from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. There is no charge for entry to Middle Farm, apart from the open farm where tickets are 4.00 per head. There is no charge for children under 3. Season tickets are also available for 35 per person or child.

Two other great things to do
If your children like splashing outdoors try Pells Outdoor Swimming Pool in Brook Street, Lewes. The oldest documented freshwater outdoor public pool in the country is celebrating its 150th anniversary. It offers a 46mx23m spring fed pool, a children's paddling pool, play equipment and cafe. For a fun-packed day out visit Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum in Halland, seven miles north-east of Lewes. Outside, explore the wildfowl reserve, ancient buildings trail or formal gardens. Inside, look at vintage cars, the splendid Bentley house and the craft workshops. Younger visitors will enjoy the adventure play area and steam train (80p per person).
