Over the past three years there has been a revolution in Worthing's restaurant culture
The Crab Shack was launched in June 2015 to provide somewhere good to eat locally caught fish in view of the seafront. Most fish is caught between Newhaven and Bognor, with lobster a seasonal favourite. Currently in Worthing’s top 10 on restaurant review site TripAdvisor, the family-run restaurant has also received positive notices from The Spectator and Sunday Times.
Part of the Proto Group, which also runs Food Restaurant in New Street and The Fish Factory in Brighton Road, The Fat Greek Taverna first opened its doors in December 2014. The open space is perfect for big parties, who can enjoy a menu cooked in a wood oven or charcoal rotisserie. Mouth watering options include the marinated lamb, taster plates, falafel & halloumi pitta, apple cider turkey burger and their own Fat Pizza.
Part of the exodus west from Brighton and Hove, Pizzaface has already established a name for itself in the city with two venues in Hove and Kemp Town. Located next door to another Brighton favourite with a Worthing presence, Boho Gelato, Pizzaface offers a unique menu of handcrafted pizzas using fresh ingredients on their own special recipe base. Options range from the Nadine – sun-dried tomatoes, goat’s cheese and caramelised onion – for £9, to the carnivore’s paradise Meathead – chorizo, pepperoni, pancetta, pork and wild boar salami and lamb prosciutto with onions and mushrooms – for £11.
Don’t expect to find pizza on the menu at this Italian favourite. Café, bar and bistro Cucinetta has been offering a traditional restaurant card in the evenings since it opened its doors at the end of 2013 – with options of primo, insalata, pasta and secondo courses. It also has a tasty brunch range offering a variety of egg dishes, filled ciabatta loaves and grilled focaccia sandwiches.
Specialising in sourdough pizza cooked in its central wood-fired oven and beautiful homemade gelato, Fiordilatte is a relatively new addition to the wide range of Italian options in Worthing. Uncowed by its location within sight of the Pizza Express chain it offers a large light and airy dining area in the heart of Worthing. Its small pizza-heavy menu offers toppings including Nduja sausage and the titular Fiordilatte cheese made from cow, rather than buffalo, milk.
Over the past few years the likes of Byron, Five Guys Named Moe and Shake Shack have replaced McDonalds as the home of the hamburger. Having opened in 2016 The Woods offers burgers made from scratch from fresh locally sourced ingredients washed down with thick shakes, craft beers and a cocktail menu in a funky industrial-themed environment. Although they offer a four-stack of 3oz beef patties with The Mountain for £11.55 it’s not just about meat – there is also The Kraken, made from crispy fried squid, the Hello Me halloumi burger and a lentil patty entitled simply The Thing About Being Vegan.
The second of a one-two punch by Darren Gearing and Brighton brothers Matt and Tim Taylor, following their seafront bar and restaurant The Beach House. The North London-style gastropub offers local ales and craft beers, accompanied by a menu of pub classics made from scratch.
OK, so this spot may be down the A259 in Ferring, but it’s well worth heading just out of the town for a visit to this tapas restaurant. You’ll genuinely struggle to decide which dishes to choose with mouth-watering options ranging from cured meats & cheese and chicken in mojo picon sauce to potatoes with garlic mayonnaise and lamb skewers with Andalucian spices.
60 Ferring Street
Claiming to serve the best chicken and steak in Worthing, Fernando’s stepped into the Nando’s-shaped hole in Worthing in 2016. At the centre of the menu is their peri-peri chicken, at four different heat strengths, with further options of chicken lemon, chicken schnitzel and chicken a la cream. Plus there’s a range of steak, pasta and vegetarian options.
The multi award-winning curry house is a firm favourite regularly shortlisted for the British Curry Awards and Asian Curry Awards. Enjoy a huge range of appetisers and side dishes, along with all the classic dishes such as tandoori chicken, royal Bengal chicken and chicken dansak.
Ever since 2006 Liming has offered contemporary Mexican cuisine and boasts a cocktail bar too. Starters include cheese quesadilla, chicken wings, pork tacos and sticky rib fingers whilst you can enjoy grilled chicken, fajitas and burritos for the main event.
For the past 15 years Imperial China has offered customers a classic Chinese spread in its palatial seafront restaurant. Set dinners are priced from £20 per person with one choice including satay chicken on skewers, crispy lamb, beef with green peppers and more.
With a second branch in Shoreham, this Italian-run favourite on the corner of Steyne Gardens offers a menu of classic dishes as well as pizza and pasta. Starters range from avocado gamberetti and scallops to deep fried fish and sautéed mushrooms. Enjoy main courses such as carbonara, fish lasagne, ravioli wild boar and risotto.
Originally Toto’s until it was renamed after its owner in December 2011, Giuseppes has built up a loyal following, serving a mix of locally sourced meat and fish with authentic Italian ingredients. The main menu includes old favourites as well as modern takes on classic Italian dishes.
Labelling themselves as ‘The Smart Food Choice’, NRG Cavern opened in 2015 and is Worthing’s first café with a menu focussing on balanced nutrition. They’re open from 8am to 4.30pm (10am-4pm on Sundays).
Despite being away from the town centre, Efes is one of the most highly rated restaurants in Worthing. Turkish cuisine is the game here with starters including hummus kavurma and calamari, all served with delightfully fresh Turkish village bread. House specials range from lamb guvec to beyti kebab.
