Jo Pavitt finds fine food and wine at the Rainbow Inn at Cooksbridge, near Lewes...
I have long heard tales of fine food and wine at the Rainbow Inn so one Saturday evening we ventured over towards Lewes to see for ourselves.
Avery traditional looking public house but with a tiny bar area and the rest given over to a tasteful, rustic restaurant, all natural flooring, neutral colours and lovely old scrubbed tables and heavy chairs. It's amazing how stylish a square table can look when it's placed on the diagonal in a room and not square on against the wall.
The place seems to be something of an institution, with a firmly established reputation for excellent food. There has been an award too - the Morning Advertiser has recently crowned it Meridian Best Gastropub (that word - argh!) 2006.
