Chapter 12, Hailsham

With Sussex growing in reputation as a wine-producing region, it makes sense that the quality of our wine bars should be similarly high

Ristorante Pappardelle has been open for over 28 years and is the longest trading restaurant under unchanged management in Arundel. Its adjoining wine bar, known as Osteria, offers a relaxing and sophisticated environment. There are more than 30 wines available by the glass along with a bar full of cocktail options. As for light bites, they serve wonderful cicchetti – bar snacks found in Venetian bacari – as well as sharing platters to soak up the wine.

Paris Wine Bar

An extensive wine list, including the intense Brunello di Montalcino, is just the start at Paris Wine Bar; there is also a seasonal menu, ranging from beef burgers to crab cakes. To sample some new tipples, the bar runs special tasting events with the chef preparing a selection of dishes to help find the right wine for favourite foods. Paris Wine Bar also caters for large groups, hosting parties, receptions and work nights out.

This live music and event venue opens Monday to Saturday and has a locally sourced menu to accompany the wine. The wine list features offerings from around the globe; the Romanian Cosmina-Pinot Noir is priced at £18.95 a bottle and the German Thanisch-Riesling Hochgewachs is £25.95. There is a monthly wine tasting headed up by different experts, such as David Elford from Crimson Gold or representatives from Hailsham Cellars.

The regularly updated list of more than 200 wines here is carefully curated by Cru’s experts with all available by the glass or carafe. With its very own shop, Cru is the perfect place to try before you buy. From the kitchen, enjoy a seasonal menu in tapas or traditional style along with cheese and charcuterie boards.
