The Hungry Guest, founded by master baker Troels Bendix, produces artisan bread and cakes near Chichester
The Hungry Guest bakery is on the edge of the Goodwood Estate, in Strettington. Head baker Pawel Litewka leads a team of six bakers, most of whom work through the night on the ‘graveyard shift’.
The bakery, part of an old farmyard with converted brick and flint buildings, supplies The Hungry Guest shop and café in Petworth with breads, cakes and other baked goods. On the other side of the yard ready meals, jams and chutneys are produced. The most popular bakery product is the chocolate brownie, says marketing manager Chloe Rice. “We sell around 250 a week. We had someone email to say she’d tried one and asking us to post them to Glasgow.”
The brownie won a Gold Great Taste Award last year.
The business has also won several World Bread Awards. “Our baguette, which we launched last year, is proving to be very popular,” says Chloe, adding that sourdough is really popular too.
