Once girls arrive in the Senior School they are able to study French and Spanish or German up to year 9 and then they all take at least one modern foreign language to GCSE.

Latin is also compulsory to year 9. All of these languages are available to study for GCSE and GCE. There is also the facility for native speakers to complete formal qualifications in their mother tongue. The more able girls are encouraged to take their MFL GCSEs as soon as they are ready.

At BHHS we try to bring languages alive for the girls, pupils from year 8 and 9 recently competed in a Trust wide Spelling Bee. In collaboration with The English Language Centre, the school frequently hosts students and teachers from Europe, giving the girls the opportunity to practise their language skills. At the Senior School a French Assistante, Spanish Assistante and a German Assistante all work with the girls to improve their language skills.

Each year there are a variety of trips and exchanges to France, Germany and Spain. Each appropriate to the target year group. Even year 6 are going on a five day residential trip this summer to Normandy.

Exam results in MFLs are always very good with 100% of MFL candidates achieving A and A*s at A level last summer. This year one of the year 13 girls hopes to take up a place to study French and Law at Oxford University.
