This spring/summer season is tickled by pretty pinks and flirty florals, inspired by the fabulous forties. We talk to designer and owner Michelle Scott about her lifestyle, inspirations and personal style…

Which era would you like to live in, if you could travel back in time?

I think it would have to be the 1920s era of the “Bright young things” and the hedonistic lifestyle films such as ‘The Great Gatsby’. Women began to feel more confident and empowered, and their new-found independence brought exciting new fashions. Hair was shorter, dresses were shorter, and women started to work, drink and drive motorcars. The attractive, reckless, independent ‘flapper’ appeared on the scene, shocking society with her wild behaviour. Girl Power 1920s-style had arrived!

What inspires you?

So many things inspire me. It could be the colour of a flower to clothes worn in an old movie. I have a passion for old Japanese prints and collect vintage kimono fabrics. I love trawling through vintage markets especially in Paris.

Do you have a favourite piece from the latest collection?

Yes, I am totally in love with the new Iris flower print dress. I wanted to design an early 1950s inspired dress that could be worn both to weddings and summer garden parties. The new neckline, button details and ¾ circle skirt adds flirty femininity to this design and I am love with the result.

I tend to design things that make women feel good about themselves and I hope they will be pieces that will stay in their wardrobes for a long time. It’s not just about the look though, the feel of fabric on skin is really important too.

How would you describe your personal style?

My style is mostly 1940s because it works everywhere, even with wellies! I think it’s important to know your body and know what you look good in.

I have a lot of rules for myself about what I wear and don’t wear; I know that I need to wear things that flatter my curves, I like my hemlines right below my knee because it works for my shape and I feel confident. As you get older you find your personal style becomes less influenced by passing fashion fads and trends.

What dress code do you live by?

I love wearing frocks as they are just so easy and in the summer I like to play more with colour and prints. As I am always running around a lot I find bally flats and wedges work best.
