Some peoples heads lead their hearts; now, says Caroline Oram of Brightons Dental Health Spa, experts believe the state of your mouth can affect the rest of your body...

Your mouth is the gateway to your body. The blood supply to your gums links with the blood supply to the rest of your body. If you have gum disease (red, swollen and/or bleeding gums) this can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, damaged heart valves, strokes, respiratory disease, diabetes and having underweight babies.

There are more than 700 different types of bacteria that live in the human mouth (both good and bad). At any one time you may have up to 10 billion bacteria in your mouth which is about two billion more than you will find on the average toilet seat! It is the bad bacteria such as streptococcus and gingivalis that cause gum disease. These bacteria get into the blood stream and travel around the body, affecting your bodily and systemic health.

Good oral hygiene is essential for healthy teeth, healthy gums and a healthy body. You should brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, use dental floss or inter-dental brushes and rinse with a mouthwash to catch all the bacteria still lurking in those hard-to-reach places and hiding on the back of your tongue.

It does not take very long at all for plaque to build up on your teeth and start attacking your gums, causing bad breath or for your teeth to appear yellow and stained. This can have severe implications for your overall confidence. If you find it difficult to remove all the plaque or have stained teeth then it is essential that you arrange to see a dental hygienist as often as they recommend.

At Dental Health Spa we are able to offer a comprehensive range of hygiene services from a scale (to remove hardened plaque called tartar) and air polish (blasting away stubborn staining caused to the teeth by exposure to tea, coffee and red wine etc) to a full mouth detox ensuring that your mouth is clean and healthy and 100 per cent kissable. We can also offer you same day Zoom whitening and home whitening which will whiten even the yellowest teeth, deep stained by tetracycline.

While we have you in the chair we will also examine your mouth for any signs of oral cancer or other health problems that can present as mouth ulcers, mouth dryness or halitosis (bad breath). We can also give you nutritional and dietary advice if you require but we promise not to lecture you on your lifestyle!

It is also essential that you practice good personal hygiene, as touching your teeth or gums with unwashed hands could spread germs and facilitate the outbreak of illnesses such as swine flu and E.coli.
