Find out who has been picked as Gallery of the Month, as well as what auctions and galleries the county has to offer throughout March...

Gallery of the Month
Zimmer Stewart Gallery 29 Tarrant Street, Arundel 01903 885867

James Stewart worked as a highly successful interior and graphic designer in London, San Francisco and Brighton before deciding on a career change that would combine his artistic and marketing experience.

On a serendipitous visit to friends in West Sussex, he fell in love with Arundel and, smitten by its musical and artistic heritage, he decided to stay. He bought the perfect house in the centre of Arundel - formerly owned by a greengrocer - and transformed it into one of the most successful art galleries in Sussex.

He encourages and showcases the best local artists including Kate Sherman (featured as Sussex Life's February Artist of the Month), Gilly McCadden, Piers Ottey, Nicholas Wriglesworth. Maggie Tredwell and Gary Goodman, who lives in Worthing but has exhibited throughout the world including the National Portrait Gallery.

Gary's paintings are both bright and sad and he questions whether they make you laugh or cry. A Fond Farewell, right, depicting a monkey dressed as a bellboy shaking hands with a woman in a negligee is certainly intriguing and makes me smile.

The gallery's March exhibition features the lycanthropic sculptures of Miles Bodimeade and the semi-abstract sea, sand and sky paintings of Katharine Le Hardy, who regularly takes her inspiration from the South Downs, constantly "exploring the movement, quality of light and atmosphere through broad, confident brushmarks".

As James says: "There is far more to Arundel than meets the eye." And he should know.
