Each month, Emily Bamber and her family test-drive the best family days out in Sussex. This month is the turn of the West Sussex seaside town, Littlehampton

If it rains...

The Hearne Gallery at Littlehampton Museum is currently a riot of colour thanks to local primary school children, whose garden-themed work is displayed until 10 July. Or pop in later in the month for Dinos of the Deep: exhibits about prehistoric sea creatures who lived off the Sussex coast millions of years ago. As well as pictures and information children can see genuine dinosaur bones.

If it shines...

Settle down for the day on West Beach, the town’s greatest outdoor asset. It’s backed by rolling sand dunes and is a great place to find fossils – check the museum website (above) for guided walks or just poke about yourselves. If you prefer a town beach with a promenade for scooters, head to East Beach where there’s also a fantastic playground. Or walk along to Mewsbrook Park, where you’ll find a boating lake and a miniature railway.

Family lunch

• East Beach Café - The coolest place in town in the best spot, offering fantastic seafood dining in the restaurant or takeaway fish and chips. 01903 731903; eastbeachcafe.co.uk

• West Beach Café - Owned by the same family, at the mouth of the Arun with views along the coast, this is a great spot for fish and chips, coffee and ice creams. 01903 718153
