Chalk Gallery Lewes celebrating 10 years of art

PUBLISHED: 11:47 26 May 2015 | UPDATED: 11:47 26 May 2015

Chalk Gallery is celebrating 10 Years since opening with a birthday party at the gallery in Lewes on Saturday 30 May 12 noon–4pm, a special exhibition at the Towner Gallery, Eastbourne 2-14 October 2015 and a commemorative book.

Chalk is a well loved, friendly gallery run by 21 professional artists offering beautiful art at affordable prices. It is devoted to promoting artists and their work. A featured artist is showcased every three weeks with a new exhibition of approximately 80 works, including paintings, sculpture, original prints and jewellery, every six weeks. The diverse group of artists work to a consistently high standard in a variety of media, style, subject and technique.

Since the Lewes gallery opened, over 100 local artists have benefited from exhibiting, and learning new skills through collectively running the business. From 2-14 October the success of this enterprise will be celebrated in a special exhibition at the prestigious Towner Gallery, Eastbourne, showing work from current and ex-members. This event will be accompanied by the publication of a commemorative book.

One of the original members, Gus Harrison remains part of the collective, with the business model remaining fundamentally the same. The gallery has been refurbished, new ideas have been embraced, and the constant change of members brings fresh ideas and a supply of new and exciting work for Chalk’s customers. Selection standards are high.

Today Chalk is established as one of the leading contemporary galleries in Lewes. It is a tribute to the founder members that the venture has been such a success, and is an achievement that a changing group of creative people can sustain this gallery. The enthusiasm and warm responses from ex-members to take part in the Anniversary Exhibition at the Towner confirms that Chalk offers something quite special for the artists, as well as the customers. Current artists are delighted to see the rewards of ten years of hard work and dedication being realised in increased sales and positive comments from customers and the wider community.

Founder member Mary Beaney says: “As Founder of Chalk Gallery I feel privileged to be asked to write a few words for the 10th anniversary celebrations. In 2003 I had a dream. To find a place to exhibit art in a friendly and accessible way. On a hot summers day in July 2004, Michele Findlay and I got together with a group of artist friends who set the idea alight. Without that nucleus of friends the idea would never have got off the ground. All in all it took a year from the planning stage to the first exhibition in July 2005.

I hope that Chalk will go from strength to strength and continue to be a stepping stone for many more artists to make their mark on the artistic scene - locally, nationally and internationally.

Although I only stayed five years I am very pleased and proud with the way Chalk has grown and matured and I would like to say to all those involved over the years - many congratulations and thank you for helping me to make my dream a reality.”

Gus Harrison says: “During my ten years I have met an amazing variety of talented artists - what a privilege!”

Current Chairman, Leila Godden says: “Being part of a supportive group like Chalk Gallery is great for artists, and offers other opportunities in addition to simply selling art. We have many loyal customers who enjoy the variety of good quality art at affordable prices, and would like to increase awareness further afield. The Towner Exhibition is a wonderful showcase for art lovers to visit, and a tribute to Chalk’s artists, past and present. We feel the publication of a book offers a tangible and enduring tribute.”

Chalk Gallery is at 4 North Street, Lewes (close to the Needlemakers) and is open 7 days a week, 10am - 5pm.
