Bellmans Auctioneers, Wisborough Green, are delighted to offer for sale the remains of the noted collection of renowned art collector Mr Saeed Motamed, which will make up almost one hundred and twenty lots in their June Antiques and Interiors sale.
The collection combines antique and decorative items with cultural heritage pieces from as far afield as Egypt and Iran, and will go under the hammer on Friday 26 June.
Saeed Motamed was born in Iran in 1925, towards the end of the Qajar dynasty. He trained as an engineer at Tehran University, before moving to Stuttgart, Germany aged 27 to further his studies. He began collecting art in 1953, and had a particular enthusiasm for Islamic glass and Persian lacquerwork. Mr Motamed’s connoisseur’s eye made him famous throughout Europe and Asia.
He has had and continues to have personal influence over the preservation of Islamic glass pieces: many items which he once owned are now prized museum exhibits, and can be found in establishments such as the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Of particular interest in the Bellmans sale is lot 2445, a Luristan bronze horse bit, dating from circa 9th-7th century B.C. Each square cheek piece has pierced decoration incorporating two figures and spearheads, and this historic piece carries an auction estimate of £300-500. Also attracting attention is lot 2461, a Moghul celadon jade dagger hilt from the 19th century, carved with poppies and a three lobed pommel, which is also expected to realise between £300-500.
As a member of the Baha’i community, Mr Motamed encouraged curiosity and appreciation of other cultures, and his collection reflects this perfectly. It transcends decades, continents and themes, and is exciting specialists, amateurs and novices alike.
Saeed Motamed passed away in March 2014. Bellmans are proud to be able to contribute to the legacy of such a remarkable collection.
Items from the Saeed Motamed Collection will be on view from midday on Friday 19 June until the day of the sale, with the entire auction fully illustrated online from Thursday 18th June.
