Grow your own in Sussex

WITH so much emphasis being put upon healthy eating and those essential five fruit and vegetable portions a day, there has been an upsurge of interest in growing your own. I urge all vegetable and fruit growers to do it organically. You will not only be sustaining yourself with fresh wholesome produce but also be sustaining and increasing our fragile environment.

I sometimes think organic gardening should have been called ‘natural’ gardening because its whole philosophy is to garden with nature and not against her. The corner stone of organic gardening is to feed the soil rather than the plant. By adding organic mater, such as composted kitchen waste and growing green manures, ideal conditions are created for the millions of organisms within the soil eco-system, to interact, multiply and produce fertility.
So buy a book on organic gardening, read it and keep it by you because it will be in constant use until you get a feel for what you are doing. Then be prepared to devote a regular, ongoing amount of your time to your allotment garden – plants for eating need tending.
