Sussex Life, August 2006

YOU’VE probably seen quite a bit of Eastbourne recently, even if you haven’t been there for some time. Turn on your TV and there might be something familiar in that drama, feature film or advertisement. This is because Eastbourne, sandwiched between the sea and the South Downs, is rapidly becoming one of the top places in Britain to film. Recent shots around town have included Notes on a Scandal starring Dame Judi Dench to be premiered this autumn and the futuristic Children of Men, featuring Michael Caine.

Not surprising really as the countryside around there has some of the most stunning scenery on the south coast. The chalk cliffs at 500ft are the highest in the UK, and as a designated area of outstanding natural beauty there are no electric pylons and other modern day eyesores making it a big bonus for film crews. No major flight paths either, thus eliminating unwanted noise.

Eastbourne and its surroundings have long been a favourite for filming. The Quiddich scenes from Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire were shot on Beachy Head and you may remember James Bond being catapulted from the cliffs in The Living Daylights. Or how about Robin Hood Prince of Thieves returning home from the crusades? If your memory serves you well you will recall the Belle Toute lighthouse scenes from the eighties in the highly popular Fay Weldon TV drama series, The Life and Loves of a She Devil.
