The rally, which runs from Hyde Park in London to Madeira Drive in Brighton, celebrates a very special day in the history of British motoring. It was first held in November 1896 in celebration of the passing of the Locomotives on the Highway Act. This raised the speed limit for light locomotives from 4mph to 14mph and abolished the requirement for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot.
