What jolly sporting types

TV presenter Vernon Kay and Olympic medallist John Regis joined members and guests at Dale Hill hotel and golf club to help raise nearly £4,000 for this year’s Sport Relief.

Other celebrities included Gareth Hale, half of comedy duo Hale and Pace, and actor Daniel Stephens, who appeared in the television adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. He said: “It is really nice to support when you can, although my style of golf is more suited to Comic Relief than Sport Relief.”

Overall winners were brothers Andrew, Mark and Gavin Wilding, members from Dale Hill’s sister club Chart Hills.

High school musical

Pupils past and present gathered for a gala concert to celebrate Eastbourne College’s musical heritage. More than 300 guests went to London’s Royal College of Music for the event, headlined by international tenor Mark Le Brocq, a former school choral scholar.

Songs from Godspell, the college’s December musical, were followed by the college choir singing Chilcott’s Jazz Mass. Also appearing were Blake, the classical pop quartet which has been nominated for album of the year at the classical Brit awards. Its members include Jules Knight, who was at the college as Julian Kaye in the Nineties. The finale was the college choir and orchestra performing Handel’s Zadok the Priest.

Opening day for the care centre

GUESTS joined staff from the Sussexdown care home in Storrington for the opening of its new dementia unit. Care South, who bought the home from the Royal Air Force Association last March, opened the new 20-bed unit to add to its existing 57 beds, The Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, hugh Wyatt, joined Care South chair Felicity Irwin for the ceremony last month. The not-for-profit orginisation and registered charity also runs homes in Bournemouth and Poole.

Home and Away

A group of young volunteers from across the UK and Nigeria are becoming familiar faces around Brighton and Hove as they give more than 6,000 hours of support to community projects in the city.

Mayor of Brighton and Hove Carol Theobald was among the first to welcome the Global X change volunteers, aged 18-25, as they arrived after three months' volunteering in Nigeria.

The programme gives them the chance to work on community projects both in the UK and overseas. the team working in Brighton and Hove brings together nine young people from Nigeria with nine volunteers from all over the UK.

They are living in pairs with local families, giving both hosts and guests a unique oppurtunity to learn about different countries.

The charity BAA Communities Trust, set up by Gatwick Airport owners BAA, is providing financial backing for the programme, with march funding fdrom the youth  Volunteering charity.

The little black dress

A stunning collection of some of the most stunning little black dresses are on shows at Brighton Museum. Gowns worn by celebrities including Victoria Beckham, Kate Winslet, Joan Collins and Brighton's own Zoe Ball (main picture) are on show alongside a collection of vintage dresses donated by the exhibitions curator, designer Andrew Fionda.
Other designers with dresses at the show include Anouska Hempel, Ben de Lisi, John Rocha and Norman Hartnell- dress maker to HM Queen Elizabeth.
The exhibition runs until the end of May and admission is free.

Royal wedding celebration

A SPECIAL service was held at Chichester Cathedral to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of the Queen and Prince Philip.

More than five hundred couples from Sussex, who were also married in 1947, gathered at the cathedral on Sunday 18th November to mark the occasion.

Music from the royal wedding ceremony was played to the congregation which included dignitaries such as the Lord Lieutenants of East and West Sussex, the Duke and Duchess of Richmond and politicians form across the county. Kate Eastman met some of the couples who took part.

Not out ninety

Hundreds of fans gathered in the grounds of Arundel’s beautiful Cricket Club to see a match between many of the game’s greats.

Former England stars such as John Snow and John Lever took part in the match organised to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).

Another special guest was Britain’s oldest man and First World War veteran Henry Allingham. Henry, aged 111 gave a well received speech thanking those present and the CWGC for their valuable work.

In glorious sunshine and under the gaze of the castle the crowds saw an Old England XI take on The Commonwealth War Graves XI and raise more than £6,000 for the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League. The match finished in a gentlemanly draw.

Goodwood Ladies Day

Not even an afternoon shower spoiled the enjoyment at a packed Goodwood as the ladies and their outfits, champagne and racing made it a very special day.

Seen as the closing highlight of the English season, Glorious Goodwood attracts the best from the sport of horseracing as well as thousands of stylish guests. The feature race of Ladies Day is the Goodwood Cup, won this year by Ryan Moore on Allegretto.

Big Band Night

Sussex Life, May 2007

Two of the county’s leading musical groups joined forces to recreate a 40’s wartime Big Band Night with members dressing the part and stepping up to sing solo with ‘Straight No Chaser’ a Glenn Miller style band under the leadership of Alex Bondia.

Brighton Theatre Group, established in 1968, are one of South East England’s leading musical theatre groups and are currently rehearsing ‘Witches of Eastwick’ which will they will perform at the prestigious Brighton Theatre Royal (July 10th - 14th) this summer as part of the Theatre Royal’s bi-centenial celebrations.


Brighton and Hove Operatic Society, who have been producing and presenting shows for over 100 years (established 1886) are presenting ‘The Harlem Shuffle’ at The Barn Theatre in Southwick this month (May 10th - 12th).

Snow in spring

Sussex Life, May 2007

 

The reception was far from frosty as the Hilton Brighton Metropole threw a giant Snow Ball, held on 17 March.  A fantastic £60,000 was raised as 450 guests enjoyed a sumptuous five course meal in the winter wonderland themed Ballroom, and danced the night away to top ‘Fab Four’ tribute band, the Bootleg Beatles. Auction prizes included a signed Snow Patrol guitar and tickets to the FA Cup Final at Wembley!

The Royal couple enjoyed a special tour of Brighton where she met a host of youngsters and representatives from across the city. It’s the second time she’s visited Sussex in four months, having been to Crawley at the end of last year. The Royal couple arrived at Brighton Station on the overnight train and their day began with a trip to the Theatre Royal Brighton, which this year celebrates its 200th anniversary. She then moved onto the City’s Jubilee Library, Pavilion Theatre, the Brighton Dome and Brighton Racecourse. After lunch at the course the Queen visited the Roundabout Children’s Centre in Whitehawk Road while Prince Philip visited the Crew Club in Coolham Drive.

Golden oldies

Brake neck speeds certainly weren’t the order of the day for these vintage cars. Almost 500 pre-1905 cars took place in the annual veteran car run, the oldest of which was over 102 years old.

The rally, which runs from Hyde Park in London to Madeira Drive in Brighton, celebrates a very special day in the history of British motoring. It was first held in November 1896 in celebration of the passing of the Locomotives on the Highway Act. This raised the speed limit for light locomotives from 4mph to 14mph and abolished the requirement for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot.

Royal visit for 40th anniversary

HRH Princess Alexandra joined more than 170 guests to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the South of England Agricultural Society.


Charles Moore, columnist and former editor of the Daily Telegraph, proposed the toast to the Society: “I congratulate you on all your charitable work promoting agriculture and the countryside – here’s to another glorious 40 years for the Society.”

David Allam, chairman of the society added:  “Over the last forty years this society has transformed a small grassland farm into a permanent showground.  The Show has of course grown along with the roads and buildings, from 250 trade stands in 1967 to 1,500 last year.  From one Show a year to four and public use of the Showground from 30 events in 1967 to 340 last year.”
