Above: Top 50 Sussex Millionaires

Sussex Life, February 2007

WEALTH creation is booming among Sussex’s millionaire class as never before. Outside central London, Sussex has the highest concentration of the super-rich in Britain. A remarkable achievement for a county of just 1.5m people which is not blessed with any real natural resources and transport links (Gatwick Airport aside). Yet it is a fact that in this, the first ever Sussex Life Rich List, covering the top 50 multi-millionaires in East and West Sussex, we find the total wealth has hit £19.6 billion – that’s an average of £393m per entry.

Of course, this figure is somewhat skewered by the presence of some of the world’s very rich. Roman Abramovich, the Russian oil tycoon, best known as the owner of Chelsea, actually bought and lives on a Rogate estate, which predates his involvement with the upper reaches of premiership football. He is not alone. Hans Rausing, of the Swedish packaging family, has built a new country house in East Sussex, where he lives a very low-key and unostentatious life despite having a near £5 billion fortune. His house is said to have been ‘built like a factory and finished like a palace.’ He also opens the 800-acre grounds for local charitable causes such as the local hospice.
