Designs for life

Above: Sussex Life, April 2008

There’s something quite addictive about Channel Four’s Grand Designs. For those of you who haven’t yet seen it (surely there can’t really be anybody left) each episode tells the story of a family building the house of their dreams. It’s the gamble I love, the risking it all attitude. I love the promise of the family’s lofty plans, the inevitable tears, scares and threats of failure before they drag themselves out of adversity for the magnificent unveiling of their unique new home. It’s normally at this point that I turn to my wife and say, right let’s do that – we’ll sell up, live with your folks for a bit, buy some land and build ourselves a mansion. Sadly, that’s about as far as it gets (I’m easily distracted by some football on the other side) but just how easy would it be? Liane Oldham looks into how you go about buying some land for yourself, meets three people who’ve done so – one who has lived the dream and built his own home and two others who bought the land for very different reasons. Turn to page 117 in april's edition to see their stories.
Thirsty work, all this land buying and house building and as luck would have it, Nancy Cremore has put together the Good Sussex Pub Guide (good work if you can get it) featuring some of the best bars and inns the county has to offer. Whether it’s a warm snug to rest your feet after a country walk, somewhere to enjoy a good Sunday lunch or a beautiful pub garden to sit and savour a chilled glass of wine, you’ll find something for everyone beginning on page 100. Of course, we’d also like to hear your tips for the best drinkery in Sussex so if your local is not included then be sure to let us know. Either join the forum at  or email me.

Enjoy your Sussex Life.
